The best time to visit St Petersburg and Moscow

St. Petersburg is a unique city. It is amazing in any season. If you are a fan of museums and art galleries, the best time is autumn or winter, as there are definitely less people. If you want to spend more time outdoors and explore the white nights, visit us in spring or summer.

Many people think the best time to visit St Petersburg is in June, during the White nights. The sun does not go under the horizon deep enough for the sky to get dark. The dusk meets the dawn and it is so bright that the streets do not need any additional lights at night. It stays light the whole night and the streets are full of life as everyone tries to make the most of it.
St. Petersburg is the world's only metropolis where such a phenomenon takes place every June when the downtown St Petersburg is full of people, even at night. Stroll at midnight under a still-light sky or enjoy city's concerts and festivals.  It is an excellent time to visit the city though you will not avoid the crowds. June, July and August are the hottest months in Russia. They make up the main vacation season. Temperatures during the summer days reach 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Moscow is full of people all year round, so it really doesn't matter.

Do come in January to enjoy the magic of a real northern winter with a lot of snow and celebrate Christmas and the New Year in Russia. For those who enjoy the look of new-fallen snow on the land or want to experience a ride in a horse-drawn sledge, called troika, this is a great time of the year. It’s the off season so you can get bargains in hotels and a better service. Don't be afraid of low temperatures as indoors it's normally well above "room temperature", so unless you're planning to spend the whole day outside you're better off with things that can be easily taken off and put back on again.

May or September-October is good if one wishes to avoid the crowds. This is a quieter, more relaxed time to visit St. Petersburg and its many fabulous sights and exceptional museums. In the fall, the trees in Russia begin to change their colors, making the parks colorful places to visit. In September the weather is not yet freezing. The beauty of the city will remain the same. The fountains will be working, you will be able to see the Golden Autumn - the trees with colored leaves will be everywhere!
